Default 2000 arctic cat atv 300 4x4 (green)

My 2000 Arctic Cat ATV 300 4x4 (green) is not sufficiently charging the battery, especially at night with the lights on. When I run the lights at night the battery will go dead. With the lights off the stator or magneto generates enough voltage to keep the engine running.
My question is as follows: The manual says my problem could be either the voltage regulator or the stator. How do I identify what the actual problem is? It appears to be easy enough to replace the voltage regulator since it is easily accessable. If it turns out to be the stator, what is the process for gaining access to the stator replacing it? How difficult is the work?

It is more than likely the rectifier. Those arctic cat 300's were known for rectifier failure. It is probably only a 50 or 60 dollar part. Which would sure beat buying a new battery every couple of months.
