Default Replacing Cam Chain

I'm replacing the cam chain on my 1990 TRX 350d, and I'm wondering if I absolutely have to take the right side of the crankcase apart. Can I do it from the top? My other question is are the chain guide and tensioner guide supposed to be coated or are they bare steel against the chain? thanks for the help.
