Default Need help wiring fan on 05 rancher 350

Hello, New to the site and already I need help. My buddy and I did maintenance on our bikes all day today one thing that stumped us was how to wire up his fan on a regular ole off, on switch, every time we try to hook up the wire to the neg. side of the batt. it just smokes the switch. Does his fan need all 12v? Or do we need to go from the fuse block to the fan? This all started because he said his fan was not coming on. Any help yall can give us is greatly appreciated.

Splice into the green wire right before it goes into the fan motor and run the wire to one side of a toggle switch. Run the other side of the toggle switch to a frame ground or engine ground. The fan on the Rancher gets power all the time when the key is on, but the control unit switches the fan on and off through the ground.
