Default 86 honda fourtrax

hi all im new to the forum.

i recently got an 86 honda fourtrax 4x4, and i was pulling some logs from a swamp and hit a rock, and got a bunch of weeds wrapped around my front axle right where it meets the wheel (sorry for the terrible termanalogy i dont know alot about quads) and now the front end grinds and clunks terribly. what could this be? tie rods? 4x4? i really dont want to spend alot of money on it and wondering what would be the most likely problem and the cheapest fix. thanks!

Well, this reply is pretty late, but better late than never lol.. anyhow, it sounds to me like the outer CV Joint is shot (See the ribbed rubber covers on the axle? There's two per axle in the front, the cv joints are inside those boots) Unfortunately I don't know of a way to actually test the joint, other than the clicking/knocking is an almost 100% sign of a bad cv... one way to SORT of check, is to figure out which side it's coming from, then while going maybe 5-10mph, turn the OPPOSITE direction of the sound and see if it get's louder.... i.e. if it's coming from the right tire, turn LEFT...sound from left tire, turn RIGHT. Hope this helps ya out.
