need help picking which atv

hey guys im new to 2x4 raceing atvs or whatever the right term is haha but ive been looking at 400ex and 300ex i cant realy afford a 400ex but i can find some realy nice 300ex atvs for less the 1000
ive built f body camaros for several years and build a few pretty fast cars do you guys think itd be a waste of money to go ahead and get a 300 or would it have enough balls to have fun on till i can afford a 400?
