Hello,
It sounds like the solenoid may not be working. If your starter turns it may not be engaging with the flywheel. The starteris most likely good though it may not be getting a sufficient amount of amperage to turn the motor over. The best way of checking this is by feeling if it's getting hot under load. Kepp the starter on if it's not making any noise and see if it gets hot. This will indicate if the amperage is insufficient. This may indicate a poor connection or bad cable. Also check your battery cables at the battery and at the starter.
As far as the kick starter they usually have some sort of cam. Chances are that the cam is worn or broken. They are generally not hard to fix or replace. Just make sure that if you do it yourself that you take pictures if you are a novice to make sure that you do it correctly. Also, be cautious if the assembly has a return spring so that you do not get embedded by it.
Good luck
