2002 700 Sportsman Under/Overvoltage

Hey All,
I have been getting the flashing battery sysmbol on my gauge panel for sometime now but it seems to disappear every time i turn on the lights. I figured it was because of an Overvoltage condition brought on by my installing a new battery. However i recently replaced the speed pickup and i noticed on checking the output voltage to the sensor i was only reading 10.4 volts. I'm beginning to think i may have an undervoltage problem.
Any tips, tricks, test points where i can verify the stator output?
I would appreciate all help.

Check all wire connections by the headlight switch.
Check Battery With engine off and it should be 12 to 13 volts and running, reved up, should be 13.5 to 14.8 +- volts. this would tell you if the charging system is working correctly.
