when you are cranking it.. smell the exhaust.. does it smell like gas?

If not i would suspect fuel pump. If it will only start when you manually give it gas, then die when it has burned it all.. its not giving itself fuel.

check and see if it smells like gas.. and what does it sound like? trying to start? you changed the coil, so we have spark, and we know we have air.. only thing left in the equation is fuel.

Does it run with the choke on? The only reason I ask is because one time my machine backfired on me, and I am guessing that is what blew the tubing off that the air/fuel mixture goes through so it was drawing tons of air, and would only run with the choke on. Probably not it, but worth a try to eliminate the easy and free fixes first.
