Default Need help with 97 kingquad

I have a 97 kingquad just put the head back on and having a tough time getting it started.
Sometimes when trying to start it backfire thru carb what would cause this.
It also seams to be running rich.

my first thoguth is timing as well. If you didnt touch the botom end it should be ok though. If your valves are adjusted wrong you could have similar problems. check valve lash
