Default Voltage Regulator on quad that never had one

Hello. I just made a similar post in the General Discussion area, but I don't think anyone is really going to see it there. I was just wondering if anyone ever put a voltage regulator on an lt125 or any other little old quad with the one wire lighting coil setup. Mine is making up to 40 Volts AC. My manual states if the output is not 5.5 to 8 VAC, then replace the lighting coil. I just did that, and cleaned the only ground for the whole bike. I still have the same voltage problem. Also, does anyone know what the point of the 6 volt lighting is? I would just get a 12 volt regulator unless anyone has a reason why not. Thanks!
