Susuki Eiger 400 Drive Gear

Hi, I have a Susuki Eiger 400 4X4 Manual. The stator gasket started leaking so I took the cover off to replace it. While the cover was off I found this 02 - 07 Suzuki LT-F400 Eiger Manual Sub Transmission Drive Gear No. 1 (27T) | eBay gear had a couple of teeth missing. My question is what would cause the gear to break and chip? Is this something to worry about or is it just wear.

Also after the atv gets used for 30-60 minutes it doesn't know if it is in F or R will this fix it SUZUKI EIGER 400 4X4 07 GEAR POSITION SENSOR TESTED | eBay

How does this all go back together, I can probably figure it out, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I should clarify, I am planning on buying a new gear but I was wondering if there is a reason the old one was so chipped up.
