Unhappy 2000 kodiak 400 stiff shocks

hi all. i have a 2000 yamaha kodiak 400 ultramatic 4x4. i just bought it a few days ago and on the first good ride i noticed the front suspension seems very stiff and in very uncomfortable to ride over bumps and what not. when i brought it back home i checked the shocks in front and adjusted them till they were on the lowest setting and they are still very stiff. i weight 160lbs and i can hardly push them down. could the shocks be worn out? i didn't think they got stiffer when they wear out but softer. as far as i know they're the original shocks and have never been changed. any help would be great or if anyone has had the same thing please let me know. i may order new shocks but don't want to if it wont fix the problem. thanks a lot.

I also noticed it has an aftermarket lift kit installed front and rear. so i took out the kit and re-mounted the shock back in the stock location and same stiffness. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
