Default Big Bear 400 Great choice or just good

Hey Guys I have a Yamaha Big Bear 400. It's a 2004 and has a winch. Do you guys think it's a good choice or a great choice?

I bought my 2000 Big Bear 400 4x4 new in the fall of 1999. I love it. I like the auto clutch manual shift 5 speed transmission. The super low first gear is awesome. My friends with full automatic belt drive ATV's are faster then me when riding on regular dirt roads. However on the rough narrow bumpy trails they can't keep up to me. It's like they have "turbo lag" or something when letting off the throttle then getting right back on it quickly, the powers just not right there at the crack of the throttle, there is a slight hesitation. I can keep my RPM's anywhere I want to and have full power and acceleration as soon as crack the throttle. Not that we race a lot, it's just nice to be a little faster then them with their larger ATV's when I can.

The only problem I've had with my BB is something drains the battery. It's done it from day one. . . . .after the warranty expired. I've put three or four batteries in it so far and it needs another one. I have a 1.5 amp trickle charger I leave pulled in all the time. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm gonna buy a cheap battery from Walmart from now on. They're half the price of a factory or suppose to be good battery.

My friend and I cleared a acre of land of mostly black cherry with some maple and oak trees to put in a food plot. We used my BB to haul all the logs to a landing so we could move them off the property. We cut the logs in 10 to 12 foot lengths. They were anywhere from 8 to 20 plus inches in diameter. My BB pulled them great. I have a 5 foot Moose plow for it that works great. Mine is full time 4x4, which doesn't really both me. Most of our riding is in the woods on small rough trails so being in 4x4 helps a little even when it's not really needed. Other then the battery issue I have no complaints. I knew what I was buying, I wanted more of a utility/work/trail cruising ATV then a sport/trail cruising ATV. I thought about the Wolverine, I'm glad I got the Big Bear though.

I agree that the Big Bear is a great choice, and I just have a 2 wheel drive. So in experiance I would say that the Yamaha Big Bear is a great choice.

My Big Bear was my first 4x4 utility ATV. Before that my parents bought my sister and I a new '86 Honda 200SX. Then when I was 18 I bought a new 1992 Honda 250X. I should have bought the Yamaha Warrior 350 instead. Mainly because the Warrior was a little bigger (longer and wider), plus had more power. The 250X was kind of small for me and seemed down on power.

The Big Bear was completely different then anything I've had before. I started looking for a 300 to 400cc 4x4 utility ATV in the late summer of '99. I looked at the '99 Big Bear 350 and didn't like it at all. Once the new 2000 Big Bear 400 came out and I sat on and test drove one, I had to have one. I've really liked it since day one, even 12 years latter. I really do prefer the auto (or manual) clutch, manual shift transmissions.

Thanks for the advice. It's a really good idea to get the yamaha Big Bear 400(thats in my thoughts). So I guess it's a great choice for a yamaha. I also love the 5 speed automatic manual shift transmission. I've had my 2004 Big Bear 400 for 7 or 8 years and have only had to put in 2-4 batteries.

I have to figure out the charging system issue. Or I might just put a high quality heavy duty toggle switch inline or either the positive or negative cable. Then just shut the switch off when I'm not using it. Then there will be no way for any kind of draw when it's not in use.

Hey guys... Any advise on an exhaust upgrade on a Kodiak 400? Without all the noise, but with all the power?

No, mine has the stock exhaust system on it. I never really looked into after market exhaust systems. Sorry.

I just bought a 2008 Big Bear 400 4x4 about a week ago for $1500, it needed the plastics buffed out and cleaned really nice along with grinding rust off the racks and repainting them, i had to replace the front wheel bearings and the back brakes. I finished all that a few days ago, ive been riding ever since. Best quad ive owned along with the best $1500 ive spent.
