Kodiak 400 4X4 Shifting Problem

Recently my Kodiak began having troubles with the shifter getting stuck. You could move the stick but it would not change out of the gear it was in. I'd have to shut it down, rock it a bit, then eventually get it to shift back into park. Start it up take off and go until it would lock up again during a shift from drive to reverse or park. Any ideas?

This is an automatic I take it? The model year would be helpful.

Sorry, it's a Kodiak 400 4WD, 20001 or 2002. The guy I bought it from about 7 years ago said it was a 2002 but the manual was published in 2001.
