91' Suzuki 230LT intake plenum

I'm having a heck of a time putting the intake plenum assembly back onto my 91' Suzuki 230LT without the back of the carb being canted so much to the left that it pops out of the rubber connector to the head. I've reviewed the manual (a lot to be desired there) and it doesn't reference it much. I looked for every image of set up I can find but no help. It's just like looking straight down at the engine with the plenum assembly installed in the filter box and forward end to the carb being an inch offset to the left. I've "clocked" the piece at the end of the plenum every way I can but no help. Anyone seen this before or have any clues? Oh' this was after a ring and valve lap job. It started just fine first try but that's because there wasn't a distributor for me to screw up and I got lucky lining up the cam chain.

I got it back together and thought I'd pass on what I learned. The rubber "manifolds on either end of the carb tend to shrink and get firmer over time. These are on a 91' 230 LT. What I ending up doing was loosen all the hose clamps that secure all the pieces of the intake and loosen the two screws securing the rubber carb. connection to the head, especially the one on the right. That way I was able to push the pieces together starting from both ends of the carb and then really tighten them as I went and finish by connecting the plenum to the filter housing. Like everything else I do it sometimes takes walking away and then thinking what the heck this can't be that difficult.
