We have a 2005 John Deere Buck 500 4x4 (not a typical trail quad--granted), and a 1995 Polaris Xplorer 400 4x4. We would like to do a little trail riding when we aren't working and I want to make sure I have spark arrestors on both machines. Actually, we need that for working too! I don't have manuals for either of them, so I watched a couple videos online and the DNR shows the test to be to stick a rod or pointer into the end of the exhaust pipe and if it stops within a couple inches you have a spark arrestor, but if it goes deeper than that you don't. Well, nothing is ever simple. Both of our quads have mufflers that angle downward instead of toward the back. When put a pointer in the exhaust it goes up about 4-5 inches. So I am hoping someone can verify for me that the angle itself might be the "spark arrestor"?

I have pictures of both.

Thanks for any help you can give!
