I have a oppertunity to buy a 2009 honda rancher 420 ES for $4700 or a 2016 polaris sportsman 450 HO for $5500 Which would be a better buy?

My two cents on this subject...Honda always has the name when it comes to "bullet proof" or "long lasting" compared to others but it truly depends how you are going to ride. If you are an occasional rider, just using the machine to get around the property and for hunting...then either will be fine. If you will be doing more work oriented tasks...like plowing, pulling things and doing those quite frequently then maybe lean towards the Honda. If I were pleasure riding with lots of mileage and hours of use, then also lean towards the Honda. If pleasure riding but only occasionally, then both will work. If you want the baddest most power in it's class with most features then that award typically goes to the Polaris. ALL of that being said, when buying used, it fully depends on how many hours/miles are on the machines and how they were taken care of. For example, if the person who owns the machines takes care of them (does oil changes and other fluid changes when they should and greases the zirqs) both machines will last well over 10,000 miles with little problems except for normal wear items (bearings, tie rods, tires, brakes...etc).

The Polaris is appealing because it is MUCH newer than the Honda but again...how was it taken care of? How many miles are on it? How many hours are on it? Was it used to plow? Was it a mud hole beater or did it belong to a hunter who used it to get to his/her tree stand and that is it?

Last comment...Honda...as bullet proof as they are...they also had issues with their ES models during certain years. id check which years those were.

As an FYI, I recently purchased a can am outlander maxx 500 (which is their 2 seater atv...much more expensive model than their regular one seater ATV). It is a 2014, with 400 miles and 50hrs on it. Came with a plow, power steering, and a winch...for 5200$ in NY where everything is more expensive.
